nanibu
2025
nanibu is a visual representation of openness, tenacity and integrity. Its goal is to portray a narrative of how we view royalty versus how royalty views themselves. The character nanibu is a visual representation of how said people portray external elegance though they are internally distressed. nanibu was created in an effort to allow the imagination an opportunity to run wild.
The motivation and theme behind nanibu was to create a character that represents the highs and lows of the people we call royalty. The idea behind the piece was to investigate what it means to be royalty through imaginative imagery and movement. The choreography utilizes bird like movement, along with colors such as purple, violet and blue as they associate with the term royalty. In using these themes in tandem with improvisation as tools to create movement, the work hopes to portray the image of a queen in distress. In my exploration of adding sound to the solo nanibu, I found that different pieces of music with the exact same movement evoked different mood to the work. In pursuing choreographic research beyond the creative process, the solo continues its exploration on stage to allow the audience to experience how music can shift the context or mood of a piece.
The name Nanibu conjures openness, tenacity and integrity.
nanibu is set to premiere April 18, 2025.
